Monsal is a well established process and technology business operating in the environmental sector. It’s core business is the treatment of waste – biosolids and biowaste, and converting it into renewable energy and a nutrient rich product.

Our separation and advanced digestion technology ensures that we produce a high quality product, free from contaminants, pathogens and odour with a rich nutrient content.

Our products are rich in nutrients and can be used as a fertiliser or for land remediation purposes.  Products from Monsal digestion plants are used every day in agricultural and recycling operations.

Any liquid waste streams including those from dewatering operations can exhibit high concentrations of BOD and nutrients.  Monsal offer a range of specialist processes for treatment of digestate liquors for BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus. Treated liquors can be used on site or comply with relevant consents.  We have know how in biological processing, and our tailor made solutions can be delivered as technology packages, ranging from phosphorus removal to supply of advanced liquor treatment plants.

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is the preferred stabilisation process for the treatment of wastewater sludges and organic wastes. The process provides volume and mass reduction and delivers valuable renewable energy with biogas production.

Anaerobic digestion is a naturally occurring biological process comprising the following key steps:

* Enzymic Hydrolysis – large molecules/polymers such as polysaccharides and proteins are converted to smaller compounds

* Acidogenesis – conversion of small compounds to Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) by anaerobic digestion

* Methanogenesis – Volatile Fatty Acids are broken down by methanogenic bacteria to methane and CO2

Monsal’s Anaerobic Digestion Technology can be supplied as either equipment/systems packages for process units such as heating, mixing, pasteurisation and biogas handling plant, through to complete digestion projects. We provide a full suite of services and technology for new build or refurbishment of existing plants.
